Mycenter-3XG Vertical Machining Center Features

A table size of 16.1” x 35.4” and load capacity of 1,100Lbs are the perfect companions for small to medium sized parts that require high degrees of accuracy and precision. New: Tornos CNC Gamma 20/6

Tornos has added new machines to its Gamma 20 Series of CNC sliding-head turning centres, suitable for cross drilling/milling and simultaneous cross drilling/milling operations at the bushing.

The new Gamma is available with either 5 or 6 linear axes and two C axis.
The Gamma 20/5 allows the customer to load 35 tools, with up to 15 rotating, while the Gamma 20/6 permits the installation of 39 tools with 15 driven, which Tornos claims is more than competitor offerings in the same price bracket.

     Tornos designed the Gamma series to provide a balance between cost and specification.

     On the counter operation post, for example, the Gamma has vertical Y-axis, vertical numerical setting and machining movement for cross drilling or milling and simultaneous cross drilling or milling operations at the bushing - features not available from many competitors.

     With material costs rising, the guide bush-less system minimises remnants to reduce waste material and the associated costs. It also enables the end user to turn right up to the bush and this permits the machining of part lengths up to 250mm as opposed to 200mm on some competitor turning centres.

     These increased capabilities can eliminate secondary operations and productivity, while additional benefits, such as integrated coolant cooled spindles, central lubrication system, synchronous rotating bushing, inbuilt high-pressure coolant and powerful and high-speed rotating tools, are just a small selection of the Gamma Series' attributes.

Down to the Wire – Conveyor Belts for Extreme Temperatures

Conveyors are often used to handle products in harsh environments and to perform under the most demanding conditions such as high temperature product cooling and heating. Stainless steel wire mesh chain is generally preferred in these extreme temperature environments. While we do not provide this belt material type as a standard product offering, many of our conveyor platforms can be modified to accept it without major alterations.

A recent project for a corn chip cooling conveyor provided just such a challenge – tweak a stainless steel AquaPruf^® 7300 Series conveyor to run a wire-mesh metal chain. By working directly with a belt vendor and our customer, we were able to retain much of the standard conveyor's design components while providing a platform to effectively run the required belt material.

The end result was a wire-mesh metal chain conveyor solution that looks and feels like a Dorner conveyor, including all the features and benefits that our customers have come to expect from Dorner, with a specialized belt to meet the needs of this specific challenge.

Swiss Turning Expo Was a Success

Plymouth, MN - Concept Machine Tool hosted a Swiss Turning Expo on Wednesday February 2 and Thursday February 3 at their facility located in Plymouth Minnesota. The two day event provided live demonstrations on a multitude of the industries largest brands of machinery including Tsugami, Kitamura, Miyano, Mitsubishi, Carl Zeiss and Quaser as well as other leading brands of accompanying products such as Blaser SwissLube, Caron Engineering, Edge Technologies, Gibbs CAM, LNS, Mass Finishing Inc., M4 Sciences, Sandvick Tooling, and NSK.

Over 200 people poured in throughout the event despite winter weather. Attendees witnessed a high-helix, double-lead, cannulated bone screw precisely cut and gun drilled in less than 30 seconds and finished in less than three minutes. They attended educational seminars presented by M4 Sciences, Blaser SwissLube and Caron Engineer, talked to product experts from multiple companies, and discussed how this technology could improve their own manufacturing processes.

Hainbuch offers quick-changeover deadlength chuck

Hainbuch America Corp. has added the Mando Adapt deadlength T811 with quick change-over interface to its workholding range. The quick-change mandrel converts the deadlength or Axfix chuck to internal gripping in less than one minute.

There is no radial adjustment necessary as the integral Centrex interface will position the unit within 0.003mm. The unit clamps radially without a drawbolt so it is also suitable for short blind bores.

Hermle Offers C 50 U Machining Center

The C 50 U machining center from Hermle is designed to meet the increasing need for machines capable of simultaneous 5-axis machining of large, complex parts in high-strength alloys. The C 50 U is suitable for industries such as aerospace, automotive, moldmaking and valve making.

With axis travels of 1,000, 1,100 and 750 mm in the X, Y, Z axes, respectively, the standard version can accommodate work pieces of up to 2,000 kg with a maximum part diameter of 1,000 mm and a height up to 810 mm.

"Incorporating Hermle's patented modified gantry design, the C 50 U is both rugged and compact and requires no special foundation," said a company spokesperson. Spindle speed is 18,000 RPM standard (9,000/12,000 RPM optional). The tool changer is incorporated in the machine base and is available with 60 or 42 pockets. Chip-to-chip time is approximately 7 seconds.

The C 50 U Dynamic is available with a Heidenhain iTNC 530 control or a Siemens S840D SL unit.

Ease of loading is facilitated by a crane-loading feature and a door opening up to 1,250 mm. Work platforms along the entire machine front and at the magazine load station are ergonomically designed to minimize operator fatigue.

In addition to a standard tilting table, the C 50 U is available with an NC swiveling rotary table, featuring a clamping surface of up to ¯ 700 mm, or the optional NC swiveling rotary table with a clamping surface of ¯ 1,150 mm x 900 mm. Both tables utilize an integrated torque motor (C-axis) and a tandem drive motor (A-axis). The RPM of the A-axis is 20 RPMs and the C-axis rotates at 30 RPMs. The A-axis is designed to increase flexibility by offering a swivel range extending +30/-115 degrees, and the C-axis rotates a full 360 degrees.

An optional pallet changing system is available in multiple sizes and configurations for partial to fully automated operation. Pallet change systems feature generously dimensioned doors for easy and ergonomic access to the work area and set-up station, the company said.

Hermle Machine President Robert Komljenovic said, "Hermle's entire C series was designed to offer our traditional high precision with increased production capability up to and including full automation. The C 50 U Dynamic, available with a wide range of options and configurations, has made this possible for manufacturers of large parts in many industries."

The C 50 U is also available in a C 50 U MT dynamic configuration. With axis travels of 1,000 mm, 1,100 mm and 750 mm in the X, Y and Z axes and a maximum table load of 1,000 kg, the C 50 U MT features speeds of up to 20 RPM in the swiveling A-axis and 500 RPM in the rotary C-axis. Equipped with Hermle's slender spindle design for deep-pocket milling and turning, it also features a manually adjustable balancing system integrated into the table to prevent damage from inertial torque.

A new laser-based tool measuring and breakage monitoring system assures the integrity of both milling and turning tools, the company said.

Other features include the elimination of chip collection on the table, torsion prevention through tandem drives and high-torque motors in the rotary axis.

"The single greatest advantage of the MT feature is the ability to perform multiple operations in full 5-axis mode in a single clamping," said Komljenovic. "Larger parts are especially susceptible to errors in positioning when being moved from one machine to another. In complex high-value parts, this can result in significant financial loss. By combining the machining and the turning processes, we can offer our customers what is in reality an automated process station with the highest precision capability."

The Ballscrew Cooling System circulates chilled oil through the X, Y & Z axis ballscrew shafts. This holds the ballscrew temperature at a constant, thereby minimizing thermal displacement assuring optimum accuracy

Intelligent Advanced Control (IAC) System

The IAC System controls the effects of heat displacement in order to ensure continuous accuracy in machining. A combination of regulating sensors and a machine efficiency monitor provides data on variable compensation values to the machine offsets, thus minimizing displacement.

The faster chips are removed from the work envelope, the better the machining process. Hainbuch's Mando T212 segmented internal clamping bushes are now available in an extra-small format with a minimum diameter of 8mm.

The T212 mandrel has no projecting draw bolt, so there is no wasted clamping length and no more fragile spring steel slotted mandrel, thanks to the vulcanised, hardened clamping bush. This standard system covers a clamping range of 8mm to 100mm in diameter.

End-stops can be fitted in front or behind the mandrel and, thanks to the pull-back clamping operation, a positive location and an accurate, rigid grip are achieved. It is also quick to change and can be used for open or blind bores.

This mandrel can be fitted to any type of turning or static machine, either as a standalone mandrel or a quick-fit accessory on the front of the Hainbuch collet system. Versions are available for special applications; these can be designed to order. These have included internal clamping solutions to 400mm in diameter and profiled-bore gripping.

1. Minimize Gas Expense: Traditional fast-axial flow laser technology sends gas through glass tubes at rates around 30 liters per hour. Unlike those machines, which use separate bottles of carbon dioxide, helium and nitrogen, Mitsubishi’s cross-flow technology premixes these gases. This simplified design reduces gas consumption down to 3 liters per hour, eliminates the need for a mixer system and dramatically reduces annual gas consumption costs.

2. Reduce Maintenance: Conventional resonators with enclosed glass tubes run a high risk of directing contaminating particulates toward the optical components, decreasing mirror life time. Glass tubes are also susceptible to cracks and breaks, which allow pollutants in, contaminating the gas and decreasing power output. Mitsubishi’s open-circulation design lowers the risk of contamination, requiring 2-5 times less maintenance.

3. Conserve Energy: During system start-up, traditional resonators sit idle for up to 30 minutes while the chamber is vacuumed down, the mixer system restarts, and gas refills the glass tubes. Mitsubishi’s beam-on process reaches full power in only 45 seconds, allowing the resonator to be shut down between shifts and during breaks, increasing uptime while dropping electrical consumption.
